I am now a wholeheartedly authentic Brown babe.

But I wasn’t always like this.

When I was growing up, I turned my back on my culture in order to fit into the Western world.
Over time, I became culturally disconnected, emotionally numb, and unable to recognize my own emotions let alone express them.

Assimilation caused me to dim my light for the comfort of others.

Patriarchy dictated what I did with my body, my actions, my thoughts, and my feelings.

Colonization led me to forget who I am and the richness I come from.

I was at rock bottom. I was exhausted, numb, disconnected, and lonely.

Surely, this couldn't just be me! So, I made the call and shared my story. I heard the first #metoo response, then one more, and then another one, and then another one. This was a widespread problem and something needed to change.

All of a sudden, I wasn't alone. I knew there were others just like me out there in this culture of silence.

So, I began healing, growing, learning and unlearning to be who I needed when I was younger. I learned how to use my voice. And that’s what I do today.

I’m a disruptor.

I am the daughter of immigrant parents and a descendent of the Girmitiyas: the Indentured laborers who were brought from India to Fiji to work in sugarcane plantations.

I draw on their strength, wisdom, and energy in everything that I do.

Whether I'm counselling, advocating, or teaching, I challenge harmful, oppressive narratives and systems that weren’t made for people like us.

To create spaces for us to heal what our ancestors were never allowed to heal.

“Hearing your story is an absolute privilege, and only you get to decide who receives that privilege…”
